Tips For Packing Up Your Kitchen

Posted on

Are you moving soon and need to pack up your belongings? One of the more challenging rooms to pack is going to be the kitchen, with so many odd-shaped items that are fragile. That's why it helps to know the following tips before you pack.

Create A Padded Work Area

With the kitchen having so many hard surfaces where things can become damaged accidentally, you'll want to create a soft surface for packing. Take a moving blanket and place it over the countertop, then place a stack of packing paper on top of it. This will ensure that you're not setting places or glasses down on natural stone that can cause an item to become cracked.

Separate Stacks Of Dishware With Packing Paper

The best way to protect plates and bowls in their moving box is with packing paper. Start by placing one in the center of your stack of packing paper, and wrap one corner so that it lays across the entire plate or bowl. Then place the next matching item on top of it with a layer of packing paper between them. Repeat the process for several items of the same type of dishware, with each one having a piece of packing paper underneath that's folded over from the same corner. Once you have a decent stack, you can fold the other corners of the packing paper over the dishware so you have a protected stack that can go into a box.

Roll Glasses In Packing Paper

Glasses should be rolled loosely in packing paper to create air pockets that create added cushioning. Place a glass along the center left edge of the packing paper and roll the paper loosely around it a couple times, then tuck the excess packing paper into the glass. Each glass can then be laid down on its side in a box to maximize your storage.

Create Bundles Of Similar Silverware

Group silverware together so that they are all of the same type. Then you can wrap them up in packing paper similar to how you rolled the glasses. Fold over the excess paper, and you have a protected bundle of silverware that you can place in a box. This will also prevent everything from clanking by moving around in the boxes.
